Arthur DRAKE

The Thetford and Watton Times of Saturday September 19th 1914 reported that A Drake was serving with the Essex Regiment. This was repeated in the issue published on October 12th. To date no record of his service inthe Essex Regiment has come to light.

Private 17162 Arthur Drake 11th Battalion Suffolk Regiment, was killed in action on 1 July 1916 – the first day of the Battle of the Somme. He has no known grave, but is commemorated with honour on the Thiepval Memorial. Pte Drake was born in Dipton (Co Durham) and enlisted in Newmarket.

We do not know if these references are to the same man, or to two different individuals. Further research is in hand...
